Article Abstract:

Recent enhancements to software packages for integrated data acquisition, display and reporting reflect the steady rise in hardware performance. This development is being used by software vendors to extend their products' performance with compute-intensive analysis routines and additional support for digital signal processing plug-in cards, acquire data faster, exploit larger memory and disks to add to data record sizes and enhance visualization via sharper display resolutions. Key platforms supported by this software include Apple Macintoshes, 80X86-based microcomputers and Unix workstations. National Instruments Corp's LabWindows 2.0 is one package that has undergone a major upgrade. LabWindows now offers a comprehensive set of graphical interface development tools for the DOS environment. Workstations, data acquisition and icons are discussed.

Putting data on a diet

Article Abstract:

Data storage requirements grow at a fast rate and can pose problems for users. The challenge is how to pack as much data as possible into as little space as possible, with no loss of information. Several data compression methods are possible and can involve lossless data-compression algorithms, run-length encoding, the Huffman tree for coding, the adaptive Huffman method, arithmetic coding, trie-based codes, LZ-78 algorithms, wide-area network applications, throughput and latency. The compression ratios for lossless data-compression algorithms is 2:1 to 8:1 depending on redundancy; these preserve all the information so it can be reconstructed without error, and are mandatory for computer programs, documents and numerical information where bad bits can be disastrous.
