Diversity of techniques: diversity of equipment

Article Abstract:

Control Techniques Process Instruments' 850 pounds sterling 'Expert' single loop variable structure control system may consist of sophisticated software, but tuning is very easy. The 'Expert' Series is able to vary the structure of control strategy, and can pick a tougher control method when it meets unknown parameter variations, but this is less optimal. The more advanced 'Expert' controller costs 950 pounds sterling, while the dual loop version is priced at 1,250 pounds sterling. Eight other related control systems and controllers are also discussed.

New ideas tap wind and water

Article Abstract:

Inventors and small firms are developing new methods of producing energy from water and water. I T Power, Eversley, UK, is developing a cross flow, low head water turbine. Roy Spicer, a farmer, of Ferndown, UK, has developed a self speed wind turbine which is inherently quiet. It rotates at 10 rpm-17 rpm, depending on the force of the wind. EMAT Engineering Consultants, Bedlington, UK, has conceived a design for wind turbines to power boats. Investment is needed by all three developers.

Parts coded by indestructible magnetism

Article Abstract:

Cambridge-based Sentec of the UK has developed a new type of coded magnetic tag that can be cut up and still retain their code number. The tags are nonvolatile and cheap to produce and can be encapsulated for applications such as industrial laundries. The Holotag can be read by specially-developed readers which can process up to 400 tags per minute.
