Doubling Britain's woodlands in 50 years will greater powers for the planning system

Article Abstract:

The CPRE believes that planners should have greater control over woodland planting so that the Rural White Paper targets can be met. This would mean closer involvement in deciding both where new woodlands should be, and the types of trees that should be planted. The process is currently informal and if the target of doubling woodland coverage in 50 years does not materialise, there could be a temptation to return to the tax incentive system.

Water resources require better planning, says House committee

Article Abstract:

No new reservoirs should be built in the UK, according to a House of Commons Environment Committee report. This document also calls for improved long-term planning of water resources, with water companies being required to cooperate on this issue with the Environment Agency and Ofwat, the water industry regulator. However, it contains no recommendation that water-availability issues should be made part of the planning process.

Irish group is fighting planning 'corruption.'

Article Abstract:

The Irish government appears to have a favourable attitude towards a group of 'concerned citizens' which claims that corruption is present within the Irish planning system. The group has put up a reward for information about possible corruption, but so far potential witnesses have failed to come forward. This may now change following the government's apparent move to offer immunity from prosecution to anyone giving evidence.
