EC '92: status report

Article Abstract:

The European Communities are working toward the goal of unifying the 12 member states into a single market by January 1, 1993, although many doubt that it is possible to achieve the goal by that date. The market resulting from this unification will be more than 320 million consumers with goods, services, people, and capital moving freely within the EC. A number of industrial leaders and economists think the single market will restore European leadership in many industries, including electronics. The technology behind information processing and telecommunications is a prime factor in unification. These two areas are seen as major contributors toward a nation's standard of living and economic competitiveness. The countries will have unified technical standards. Research into information technology will focus on tangible contributions to the EC's competitive standing in the world.

Data communications: special guide

Article Abstract:

The worldwide text, data and image communications markets are expected to grow dramatically in the next few years. Insight Research Corp (Parsippani, NJ) predicts that the combined text and data communications segment in the US alone will grow from 1990's $36 billion to $94 billion in 1994, while the US image communications market will grow from $22 billion to $74 billion. The demand for and availability of new communications capabilities will result in a wide variety of new products and services and more opportunities for engineers. Major trends in text, data and image communications include the proliferation of high-speed (50M-to-150M-bps) local area networks (LANs), a growing need to connect LANs into wide area networks (WANs) and the advent of multimedia communications systems and standards. These subjects are individually discussed in related articles.

Transportation

Article Abstract:

Microprocessor-based systems continued in 1986 to provide safer, more reliable operations at lower cost in the North American rail transportation industry. Automated rail systems are optimizing distances between adjacent cars; routing trains; performing interlocking functions; and providing central train control. Several US transit authorities and commuter rail operators have begun exploring ac propulsion systems.
