Expert opinion: in search of simpler software integration

Article Abstract:

Major trends in computer software include operating system improvements to facilitate portability, alliances that are also intended to improve portability, continuing emphasis on object-oriented programming (OOP) languages such as C++, more use of object-oriented data bases and eventual replacement of computer-aided design (CAD) frameworks with general-purpose programming tools. Many computing environments are requiring UNIX, MS-DOS and Macintosh operating systems to work together, resulting in both short-term integration strategies and long-term alliances to resolve the problems. OOP languages are being used more and more because they enable the programming of modular, reusable software. C++, the favorite OOP language for development of electronics applications, is being improved in 1992 with the addition of template and exception features. General-purpose programming tools will replace CAD frameworks because the former offers greater availability, larger markets and consequent opportunity to be more innovative.

Expert opinion: PCs and workstations blend new kinds of applications

Article Abstract:

A variety of exciting new applications combining multiple software technologies are being implemented for microcomputers and workstations. These applications are being made possible by advancements in memory density and central processing unit speed of about 60 percent annually, greater utilization of reduced-instruction-set computer (RISC) processors in stand-alone and multiprocessor systems, improved system bandwidth, decreasing costs of high-quality audio and video systems and advancements in networking and data-compression technologies. The kinds of applications being made possible by these hardware technologies include the combination of 3D graphics and imaging, the addition of digital sound and video to create multimedia applications, the networking of remote systems into single computer environments and the sharing of such data types as audio and 3D graphics over networks.
