Finding and implementing best practices in higher education

Article Abstract:

Colleges planning to implement Total Quality Management can use the traditional industry benchmarking model to identify the best practices for each course. This includes the identification of the results expected from a course and the processes used to attain them, the analysis and comparison of processes among colleges and the merging of the best practices to form the benchmark. However, a random telephone survey of 26 business school administrators revealed that 21 of them considered benchmarking difficult to carry out.

Tech-Prep of Texas decided in 1992 that students taught total quality management (TQM) skills were more prepared for the workplace. The TQM-Tech-Prep Curriculum Development Project was created to develop a program centered on the four elements of TQM, namely, customer satisfaction, continuous improvement, empowerment and teamwork. The Walk the Talk model helps teachers show how to use TQM to students.
