Forthcoming attractions - a visit to your 'local' multiplex?

Article Abstract:

It is common for multiplex cinemas to be sited on edge-of-town developments because of growing competition between towns and cities to attract investment in leisure. Growing numbers of out-of-town multiplexes have been passed by planners largely unchallenged. However, the argument over whether such developments should be treated the same as other retail developments is again surfacing with a forthcoming Department of the Environment inquiry into two proposals for sites on the outskirts of Norwich. The argument focuses on whether multiplex developments should be rated under PPG 13 rules which call for cinemas and theatres to be given town centre locations.

The greening of Docklands

Article Abstract:

Wildlife corridors are being established along the river Thames in London, England. Ecology parks have been included in the Docklands development scheme by the London Docklands Development Corp. The parks have educational value and have been aided by the recession, which has meant there is less pressure to devlop the land. Nesting rafts have been set up for water birds to use and they have successfully attracted birds. Office workers can also use the parks to eat their lunch.

Districts undertake to protect-a-hedge

Article Abstract:

ADAS, the UK government's agricultural advice agency, is linking with the DoE and MAFF to draw up plans for protection criteria for hedgerows in England and Wales. These regulations would be enforced by district council planning authorities. There are a number of ways in which a hedgerow qualifies for protection, but some observers fear that many hedgerows will in fact not be protected, as the criteria rely on documentation which does not exist for many hedgerows.
