Granite: the true stone of precision gaging

Article Abstract:

The use of granite surface plates as gaging surfaces is increasingly becoming popular due to their flexible size, shape and accuracy. When buying precision granite, it is important to make sure that the manufacturer has observed the proper temperature and humidity control necessary for stabilizing the material. In the shop floor, users should replicate the conditions found in the manufacturing environment to preserve the tool's accuracy and support surface plates and machine bases properly.

Gaging compressible materials

Article Abstract:

Difficulties in gaging compressible materials include accuracy in measurements since compression decreases the materials' actual measurements. Some of these materials are subject to industry specifications while some are not. For these, most industrial firms devise their own gaging practices. Several devises for these purposes are cited and evaluated with analyses of specific types of compressible materials.

External thread gaging

Article Abstract:

US military discovery that its threaded fasteners failed to meet specifications generated a problem involving stricter specifications, gaging techniques and the development of a 'best' thread checking method. Fixed-limit gages or thread gages have emerged as the best option for solving the specification problem. These gages are easy to use, cost efficient and offer a 100% check for all thread elements.
