Guidelines and advice in navigating fair use

Article Abstract:

Fair use law in the digital age, for which it was not written, is discussed as it relates to chemists and others. Fair use is the privilege of using copyrighted material in a reasonable manner without having to get permission. The reasonable manner can vary from one copyright owner to the next. Often 200 words or 10% is considered fair to use, but other factors must be considered as each case is different from each other case. Four factors to be addressed for a court are listed in Sect. 107 of the US Copyright Act of 1976. Publications and policies of the American Chemical Society are discussed.

Copyright piracy: It's not a small world after all

Article Abstract:

Copyright piracy, which is a worldwide problem, in any medium, and difficult to combat, is discussed. Scientific publications are often targeted. Topics include international alliances against piracy and piracy in the computer age. Efforts to protect intellectual property are becoming more coordinated from country to country and the 'three E's,' education, encryption (for that which is digital), and enforcement are being used more effectively. Situations in China and the Philippines are discussed.
