Interest in low-temperature reactions heat up

Article Abstract:

There is growing interest in the development of lower-temperature reaction technology and production strategies which are touted to have significant benefits especially in the manufacture of pharmaceutical and fine chemicals. Among the benefits of low-temperature reactions are more controlled reaction rates and better stability of intermediate transition states. Side reactions are also eliminated while reaction selectivity and stereospecificity are increased.

CPI races to meet Y2K challeges

Article Abstract:

Chemical process industries are preparing for possible problems that could stem from the coming of the new millenium. As early as 1998, chemical companies are checking their processes and computer systems for kinks that may be caused by the year 2000 (Y2K) computer date change problem. Computer software and hardware vendors say that chemical process industries are generally ahead, compared to other industries, in addressing the Y2K issue

ChEs spur improved food safety

Article Abstract:

Chemical engineers are turning to technological applications to enhance food safety. Thermal methods have been used traditionally to minimize or eliminate the harmful effects of food contaminants. However, the impact on food flavor, fragrance and other favored characteristics has led to applications using non-thermal techniques. These techniques include high pressure technology, enzyme use and pulsed electric fields.
