Internal certification: the key to continuous quality success

Article Abstract:

The internal certification program initiated by Caterpillar Inc in Peoria, IL in 1988 has generated success in terms of quality and cost benefits. The program centered on recognizing employees who worked on production processes that produced defect-free components and assemblies. Awards were given on site by the company's top managers. The certification program resulted in improved layout, less material handling and inventory, increased training and education and enhanced information systems. Caterpillar Inc also has a certification program for its suppliers to ensure product standards.
