Among its key advantages are cost reduction and reductions in the development lead times of the final product. It also has positive effects on international product development and operations management policy of companies. The technical and organizational implications and benefits of a platform strategy are discussed and the evolution of product development through the use of a platform strategy in Japanese automobile makers is analyzed.

QFD has the same elements of project management such as the definition of goals and team selection but replaces uncertain decision making processes with a structured methodology which uses information available throughout the organization.
