Inventories in the economy in transition

Article Abstract:

The effects of changes in Eastern Europe on inventories are analyzed with regard to factors significantly affecting the inventory situation. Transitions in different nations exhibit both similar and contrasting features. The results show that inventory problems will increase due to these changes, although they may later on be offset by other factors. The present inventory increase is not permanent and is co-terminus with the transition process. The shift to market economies entails a decrease in inventory investment.

The relationship of work-in-process inventories, manufacturing lead times and waiting line analysis

Article Abstract:

The interdependence between work-in-process inventories, lead times and queues in manufacturing processes is analyzed through the use of the queueing theory. The theory is used in evaluating job shops, flow line shops, flexible manufacturing process and flexible assembly systems. The results show that the operating features of the manufacturing systems are related to waiting times. Manufacturing lead time needs a combination of queueing network analysis, as well as optimization techniques.

A comparison of the behavior of Japanese and US inventories

Article Abstract:

The behavior of the Japanese and US inventories at the aggregate and sectoral levels are compared. Japanese inventories are more acyclical while US inventories are seen as greatly procyclical. The secular movement of both inventories and sales are not intrinsically bound together so they do not move together in the long term. However, Japanese inventories exhibit a secular decline in the inventory sales ratio, particularly for raw materials inventories.
