Jenoptik sparks Jena Tech/Innovation Park

Article Abstract:

German firm Jenoptik AG has contributed enormously to the economic revival of the eastern city of Jena. Under the leadership of Lothar Spath, Jenoptik formed joint ventures with former Carl Zeiss scientists who had started their own high technology startups. Their main areas of collaboration are in the fields of clean room technology and opto-electronics. The federal government provided funds to finance technology for the high technology startups while the state of Thuringia also provides financing for firms that join the Technology and Innovation Park in Jena.

Germany hopes new innovation ministry will force closer industry-government ties

Article Abstract:

Germany's Federation of German Industry and the German Chamber of Industry and Trade were instrumental in establishing an innovation ministry by merging the country's federal research and education ministries. Juergen Ruettgers was appointed to head the ministry. He is tasked with establishing new science education standards and new research institute programs. Ruettgers wants the German government to offer tax priviledges to research and development investors.

Jena high-tech center strives for global role

Article Abstract:

Carl Zeiss, once regarded as the most influential technology conglomerate in East Germany, is constructing a new high-tech center in Jena. The high-tech park is part of a $2.4 billion German government plan to establish a technology region from its ruins. The German Ministry of Research and Development gave its approval to a multi-billion-dollar plan in 1992 to fund technology startups andto build 15 high-tech parks in the east.
