Machinations in the Mendips: last week environmentalists heard that their opposition to the extension of Whatley Quarry had finally failed

Article Abstract:

The decision by secretary of state John Gummmer not to hold an inquiry into a further application by ARC to extend Whatley Quarry in the Mendip Hills, has caused concern to environmentalists. A Friends of the Earth spokesman believes that the Somerset minerals local plan is urgently required to control quarrying in the area. Environmentalists believe that the landscape will be irreversibly affected if quarrying is allowed to continued.
