Mapping aids protein development

Article Abstract:

Researchers at Genencor International have developed a new in vitro cell- based assay that systematically analyzes specific regions along the length of a protein for their ability to produce an allergic reaction. Regions of the protein that induces an allergic reaction are called epitopes. Once the epitopes are detected, the protein can be reengineered to remove the potentially allergic reactions with minimal effect on protein function.

Chemical engineering in extraterrestial environments

Article Abstract:

Chemical engineering technologies are playing a major role in space programs because of the need for in sity resource utilization (ISRU). ISRU reduces the amount of fuels and consumables that must be launched from Earth by producing them from resources available on the desired target. Chemical technologies are used to transform raw materials into products that can be used for propellant, life support, construction and other activities.

Creating nanostructures via genetic engineering

Article Abstract:

Scientists at the Ames Research Center in California have extracted a gene from a single-celled organism that lives in hot springs. Then the gene was instructed to make a sticky protein, and it was cloned into E. coli. The researches believe this protein can be developed into electronic devices on a nanometer scale.
