May the force be with you: power quality problems which affect computer installations are said to be costing industry and commerce in the UK about 200 million pounds sterling per year

Article Abstract:

Power quality problems in business are becoming a major problem and the main areas where problems occur are in the use of microprocessor controllers and equipment, and inverter drive technology. It is important to have adequate electrical installation and there are key considerations when designing or renovating an electrical installation. The installation must be able to handle main power quality disturbances and best practice engineering solutions to avoid or counter power quality problems should be initiated.

Spot the ball: Cheating in the gambling world is no longer restricted to the black-jack table

Article Abstract:

A plan to rig the football game between Charlton and Liverpool at Charlton involved installing electronic gadgetry onto the floodlighting wiring circuit. The aim was to plunge the ground into darkness when the game had reached the point at which the betting ring had placed its wager, so that the match could not be restarted. This has placed doubt on four other Premiership games when blackouts occured, but all floodlighting installations were checked and no unusual devices were found, only neglect.

Box pops

Article Abstract:

There are strict laws and regulations covering the use of enclosed installations in hazardous ares, such as mines and places where certain gases are present. Contractors must follow guidelines set out by the European Economic Area directives which cover electrical installations in hazardous areas. Each type of area has been allocated a rating which indicates what type of enclosure must be used, as well as material and requirement limits.
