Meeting the medical market

Article Abstract:

The Federal Laboratories for Human and Animal Health building, in Manitoba, Canada, incorporated a unique fire alarm and evacuation system. As researchers disputed the use of a conventional alarm/evacuation protocol, wherein the entire building would be evacuated on a second stage alarm, the 305,000-sq-ft building in Winnipeg was segmented into four fire-alarm areas, so as not to compel the shutdown of critical experiments whenever another section of the building is on an alarm. The revamped design encompassed a first-stage alarm, which results in audible and visual signaling throughout the affected area only; and a general alarm, wherein an affected area is placed in evacuation stage, while the three other areas are placed in first-stage notification.
