Mill optimised 2,000 times/second

Article Abstract:

Cambridge Control is developing a new hydraulic controller for British Steel (BSC) which is intended to improve the control of a rolling mill making I-section rolled steel joists. The control system may use Edmunds' Algorithm to complete the computation loop in 0.5 ms, the time believed to be available. The new development is believed to be very reliable, and able to be transferred easily to various hydraulic control and production tasks. It is expected that final delivery will take place in some 18 months' time.

Manufacturing companies are using rule-based computer software to produce the best designs to meet customer requirements in the shortest time at the cheapest price. Artificial intelligence saves time and allows evaluation of a number of options. Companies can recoup setting-up costs through increased business. United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry awards have recognised companies' achievements in producing the best deals.

Undersea camera puts cracks under the microscope

Engineers at the University of Aberdeen have developed a laser-based holographic camera designed for undersea use. The camera is detailed enough to record objects a few microns across and can also be used on land.
