Moving Java to the factory

Article Abstract:

Java technology is playing an increasingly important role as companies find themselves pressured to merge their enterprise computing arrangements with their industrial control infrastructures in a process referred to as enterprise integration. Until recently, commercial computing was generally dismissed as inadequate for satisfying the needs of a factory environment. Java technology, implemented in software and in hardware, changes the situation. Commercial computing is now regarded as viable for use in industrial control applications.

Many graphical user interfaces are competing to replace the existing desktop model by providing more information and space on the screen. Some of these interfaces are: Microsoft Windows Vista; Sun Microsystems's Project Looking Glass; Xerox Corp.'s Star Tree; and Groxis Inc has developed a new type of interface for internet browsers.
