No such thin as a free lunch, so make sure you pay: good liaisons between the prime movers of regeneration schemes is essential

Article Abstract:

The former development director of the south east London borough of Greenwich, Heather Kerswell, spoke of good liaison between the primer movers of regeneration schemes at the RTPI National Planning Conference and Exhibition. She spoke of the need for local authorities to build up their support networks. However managing director of Plantech, a software company, felt that pooling resources and linking up could affect a planner's impartiality.

RSPB demands SPA review as EU backs its stand

Article Abstract:

A recent European Union ruling has backed up the view of the RSPB that economic considerations should not be allowed to dominate the way Special Protection Areas are drawn up. The RSPB believes that the government should award this status only on the basis of a site's wildlife significance, and should provide habitat compensation for the loss of Lappel Bank, a site on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent which has now been reclaimed.

Structural defects in the system

Article Abstract:

The recent Department of Environment announcement that merging local councils will not have to restart the local plan cycle has helped clarify confusion over reorganisation plans. However, structure planning has yet to be clarified. An overview is given of how various counties are managing and coping with the changes, including a mini profile of Scotland and Wales.
