EPA issues security alert

Article Abstract:

The EPA has issued a warning to chemical process plant operators to implement security measures to prevent their facilities from being sabotaged by persons and their computer networks from hackers. The federal agency recommended that only authorized users should be given access to computer systems by installing computer authentication and authorization mechanisms. The entry to control rooms should also be limited and monitored while critical equipment should be placed in blast-resistant buildings.

Ozone and particulate standards may be headed to the highest court

Article Abstract:

The EPA has requested the Justice Dept to petition the Supreme Court to review the constitutionality of the Clean Air Act regarding its application to the 1997 established air quality standards for ozone and particulate matter. An appellate court on May 14, 1999, ruled that the EPA had arbitrarily set the ozone and particulate matter standards without no refenrence to any guiding principles that could be applied to every pollutant, and had therefore violated the constitution. The standards cannot be enforced until after the Supreme Court decides on whether it will review the decision and, if so, when it will hear the case.
