Process intensification: transforming chemical engineering

Article Abstract:

Chemical engineering developments at industrial research centers and universities share a common focus on process intensification, an old concept that has emerged as a special discipline in the field. The process involves the creation of novel equipment and techniques that are expected to bring marked improvements in manufacturing and processing to eventually lead to cheaper and sustainable technologies. Most methods fall under three categories, namely, multifunctional reactors, membrane separations and alternative forms and sources of energy.

Process information: achieving a unified view

Article Abstract:

The method by which processes are designed and plants are run will alter as a result of developments in computer hardware and software. In the traditional paradigm of process engineering, the engineer waits for the completion of the scale-up process before proceeding with procees engineering analysis that is performed via detailed simulation. With the emergence of a new paradigm, simulation is carried out even at the discovery stage. In plant operations, greated focus on the use of information technology is seen in the next 20 years.

Process engineering: moving in new directions

Article Abstract:

Process engineering developments in the year 2020 will be driven by increasing worldwide competition. Seven major themes will guide developments, namely, raw-material-cost reduction, capital-investment reduction, energy-use reduction, increased process flexibility and inventory reduction, greater emphasis on process safety, increased attention to quality and better environmental performance.
