Procurement issues

Article Abstract:

Quality-based selection (QBS) is widely regarded as the best approach in choosing engineering consultants. However, differences in opinions arise over its application in situations where changes during construction increase project cost. Delon Hampton has suggested forming a partnership between the owner and designer, with an agreement to limit the cost increases due to errors and omissions. An alternate approach recommends that designers should instead strive for excellence to produce an error-free construction contract document.

Partnering for performance

Article Abstract:

A partnership allows both parties to achieve goals that they could not have accomplished individually. A good example would be that of supervisors and employees. Without mutual respect and enough communication, the organization cannot expect to succeed in their endeavors. Employees should also help their company determine what their customers expect and take the initiative to achieve these goals. Controlling practices should not hinder the employees' need to act and think interdependently.

Learning on the jagged edge

Article Abstract:

New management concepts advocate sharing the responsibilities of the company's decisions with employees. The values and goals of every employee within an organization need to be in agreement with that of the management team to ensure the company's success. The success of a company can, therefore, be measured based on how the employees feel about their job and the way they perceive their company does business.
