Input congestions in loan operations

Article Abstract:

The efficiency of loan operations in Swedish banks is studied using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. Results show that deregulation has reduced the efficiency of the banking sector mainly due to rising credit losses. Banks which place less emphasis on maintaining low credit losses are often the acquiring party in merger situations. It is also suggested that the DEA is an effective tool in analyzing previously regulated industries.

Article Abstract:

The statistical cost accounting methodology is used to evaluate profitability variations across the Greek banking industry for the period 1977-1986. The statistical technique equates bank net earnings with the weighted sum of the bank's different assets and liabilities. Empirical results showed that asset and liability management were key factors in interbank profitability.
