Short term inventory and employment interplay in Finnish manufacturing industry

Article Abstract:

The interaction between inventories and employment levels in the Finnish manufacturing industry is analyzed using seasonally adjusted data. The analysis of the correlations between inventory investment and employees shows that there is a positive relation between the two. The function of capital user cost and inventories reflected the reaction of metal industry inventory investment to capital cost changes. A flexible accelerator model implied that counter-cyclic inventory determinants directly affected input inventories.

Making sense of technology: towards a synthesis between neoclassical and evolutionary approaches

Article Abstract:

A study explored the issue of the manner in which different economics-based paradigms deal with technology-related concerns that are considerably significant in the discipline of production economics. Specifically, it compared the mainstream, orthodox neoclassical approach that is widely used in production economics and the heterodox evolutionary approach that is especially geared for analyzing qualitative change processes. It is argued that these two methodologies can primarily be considered as being complementary.

An analysis of the inventory behavior in a q-theoretic framework

Article Abstract:

A generalized q-model has been developed to illustrate the dynamic impact of unexpected and announced demand and supply shocks on the accumulation of inventories by a monopolist. Two versions of the model are examined where the first one involves a non-negativity constraint on inventories and the other involves negative inventories. Results indicate that incentives to smooth production take place only when the firm is permitted to have negative inventories.
