Real-time simulation of VLF atmospheric noise for use in the calibration and characterization of LORAN-C receivers for aircraft navigation

Article Abstract:

This paper describes a real-time simulation technique for generating realistic VLF band atmospheric noise. Noise in this band consists of a background Gaussian component plus a non-stationary impulsive component. The simulator implements as a real time simulation the theoretical model described in Feldman(1). Stored channel simulation using a high performance personal computer (PC) drives an off the shelf multi-channel signal generator, providing a high degree of sophistication at low cost. The simulator developed at the Volpe National Transportation Center has been used to characterize Loran-C receivers for use in aircraft navigation. Examples of use of the new simulator in the characterization of Loran-C receivers are presented. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Digital Simulation of Guidance and Control System of an Advanced Supersonic Fighter

Article Abstract:

Modern supersonic fighter planes are equipped with sophisticated mission computers, flight controllers, and weapon controllers. It is desirable for the pilot to be able to guide the craft along an optimum trajectory. Optimization may refer to minimization of time or fuel use, or maximization of range. The flight control system allows the autopilot to direct the craft. The crafts control systems are tested for operability using real-time simulation. The plane modeled is a lightweight, high thrust-to-weight ratio fighter. Various maneuvers were simulated using both on-line optimization and off-line optimization approaches. A block diagram of the guidance and control system, graphs of simulation run results, and diagrams of the turns studied are included.
