Article Abstract:

Recycled products, including fleece for clothing from poly(ethylene terephthalate), sweaters from PVC containers, and others, in unexpected places and with unexpected economics are discussed. Activated carbon from scrap tires and from pistachio shells has been studied. An alternative to road salt and methane to run cars are being investigated. Durable plastic from resources like corn, sugarbeets or wheat is being investigated. Companies whose products or research are discussed include Cargill, Dow Chemical, and Cargill Dow Polymers, Comprehensive Resources, Recovery and Reuse Inc. (CR3), Elf Atochem North America, Charles Dubourg Creations, Rhovyl Eco, Malden Mills and the Electric Power Research Inst.

Article Abstract:

Chemistry researchers are just beginning to discover the chemical and physiological functions of aphrodisiacs, which have been used since the dawn of human history. Definitions of terms are considered and contents of commercial products are considered. Damiana for women, yohimbe for men, and other stimulants or herbal origin are discussed, based on studies. Companies whose products are discussed include San Francisco Herb & Natural Food Co. and Nature's Herbs, a division of Twin Laboratories Inc.

This article dwells on the initiation of research on bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the United States. The research is of importance in view of its implications to human health and animal industry. Research focuses on prion proteins and their conversion to disease-causing form leading to the development of Creuztfeldt-Jacob disease.
