Article Abstract:

Intelligent software can be used to accelerate the engineering design process, although fully automatic engineering design remains an unachievable goal as the designer's expertise is a necessary component of good design. Developments in automated software in 1996 include the PT/Products Suite, available from Definitive Applications, which incorporates diagnostic and repair functions in its PT/ImporTools CAD data import module, and the products available from Concentra which aid car and aircraft design. ANSYS 5.3 software from Vutrax and The Silicon Graphics O2 series are also described.

Article Abstract:

A company wishing to install a package for the integration of design data, both intra- and inter-departmentally, should examine carefully the advantages and drawbacks of the very wide range of products which are on the market. Some integrate better with existing CAD or information systems than others. All require a considerable investment of time and endeavour. Details of several products are discussed, including Centra 2000, the Euclid Quantum system from Matra Datavision, and IMAN 3.5 from EDS Unigraphics.
