Software variety and hardware value: a case study of complementary network externalities in the microcomputer software industry

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the influence of software provision on the valuation of hardware in the microcomputer industry from 1981 to 1986. The economic and technological association between software and hardware developments was also examined. Results indicated the importance of varieties in computer software available for a computer platform in the adoption and development of novel computer technologies.
