Solid state

Article Abstract:

The Semiconductor Industry Assn. predicts that the semiconductor sector will focus on four areas of research and development in 1996. These technologies are single-chip systems, high-power multimedia engines, dynamic random access memory-based microprocessors and high-speed graphics and video operations. The development of these technologies are expected to lead to the emergence of new electronics products before the end of 1996.

Educating the renaissance engineer

Article Abstract:

University engineering courses are broadening their curricula because industry representatives have communicated needs for engineers who can work better with customers and employees from other disciplines. Engineers should know foreign languages, have computer skills, be good communicators and have knowledge of nontechnical disciplines. Programs at several US universities are discussed and compared to those in Europe.

The uphill struggle: no rose garden for women in engineering

Article Abstract:

In the US, only 8.5% of all engineers are women and few make it to the top in their organizations. A discussion of eight successful women engineers working in different fields revealed discouraging attitudes of parents and counsellors, gender bias, family responsibility and sometimes open harassment to be the main reasons. Choosing mentors instead of working in isolation help most women.
