Technology '84: Rail Transportation

Article Abstract:

Two new linear-induction motor systems for mass transit will begin operation in Vancouver, B.C., Canada and Birmingham, England in 1984. The Vancouver system is under complete computer control with software playing a big role in safety. Thyristor-controlled induction motor systems and ac propulsion should continue making advances in 1984 also. Several microprocessor based systems for propulsion and braking control are under development in the United States. A commuter rail system in New Jersey is being converted from a dc system to an ac-operated system. Three magnetic technology rail systems are illustrated.

Reliable Power: Approaching Perfection

Article Abstract:

Solar-cell arrays on spacecraft are very reliable due to serial and parallel connections of individual cells. Future solar-cell arrays will be high power, light, modular, easily deployable and retractable and will operate at very high voltages. Superior gallium arsenide cells are being developed that may be useful in microelectronics.

The European Scene: Research on Three Levels

Article Abstract:

Europe is supporting research into next-generation computer technologies within the European Community, within nations, and within individual companies. A five-page table illustrates areas of research and funding for industry and universities. France, Great Britain, and West Germany support work in their own nations.
