Technology priorities for the White House

Article Abstract:

Technology-related issues facing the next US President are discussed, along with the stances and strategies of Democratic, Republican and third-party candidates. Republican George W Bush defers most details on technology to his campaign advisers. His senior technology adviser, former congressman Robert S. Walker, cut funding for some technologies in the 1990s and tried to kill off civilian technology programs. Democrat Al Gore is known for his technology savvy and has written a book on environmental issues. Ralph Nader, running on the Green Party ticket, favors breaking up Microsoft and is skeptical about technology controlled by large corporations. Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan has a protectionist agenda and opposes offshore high-tech outsourcing. Key issues facing whoever wins include the so-called digital divide, in which computer access is largely a privilege of middle and upper-income Americans; global warming, an issue to which the US is slow to respond; clean-air legislation; fuel prices; and Internet privacy.
