The 21st century challenge

Article Abstract:

The US manufacturing industry is rapidly being overtaken by its global competitors, mainly due to complacency. American manufacturers will have to restructure themselves so that they can become more competitive. Among the areas they have to focus on are personnel training, the aftermarket, long-term durability and reliability and profit margins. This is mainly due to a marked decrease in the birth rate and a slack in an interest to engage in this field of endeavor. To rectify this, several human-resource strategies are proposed, the most important of which is that of convincing the youth to choose engineering as a profession.
