The VCR: 1975

Article Abstract:

Advent of the first Sony SL6300 Betamax-format video cassette recorder (VCR) in 1975 and the first JVC HR3300 VHS-format VCR in 1976 was preceded by several years of development which split the formerly monolithic consumer electronics industry. Sony and JVC wanted to develop a standard for helical-scanning VCRs using half-inch tape, but Sony founder Masaru Ibuka wanted a cassette no larger than a paperback, while JVC argued for a two-hour videotape that required a larger cassette size. Both firms were unwilling to compromise their design requirements, and two VCR formats are the consequence. There has been some degree of convergence subsequent to the original product introduction. Details of the design and development of Sony's Betamax and JVC's VHS systems are described.
