The battle for the SX-70

Article Abstract:

Texas Instruments and Fairchild Semiconductor, in 1970, were in competition for a contract from Polaroid for the electronics portion of the SX-70 camera. Success of the project, which was aimed at developing a camera that could fit into a jacket pocket, depended on fabrication of integrated circuits (ICs). Sophisticated electronics were needed for the single lens reflex functions, flashbulb selection, exposure control, mirror positioning, start of print development and ejection of print. ICs were needed for the motor control module (npn motor drive transistor and a discrete pnp dynamic braking transistor) and for the exposure control module. Three ICs were included in the exposure control. Research and development contracts had been awarded in 1969. Although useful information was withheld from Texas Instruments and Fairchild by Polaroid (fearing competition from Kodak), Texas Instruments eventually quoted Polaroid5 target. Fairchild subsequently dropped out of the competition. The Polaroid SX-70 camera was a success on the market.
