The development of an object-oriented simulation system based on the thought process of the manufacturing system design

Article Abstract:

An integrated planning and evaluation framework for manufacturing system designs based on a thought process model is proposed. The thought process model assesses the design of a manufacturing system from the abstracted design stage to the detailed design. In addition, a prototype system for simulation that utilizes an object-oriented architecture is implemented with the proposed simulation model. It is shown that the simulation system is capable of supporting the design of a manufacturing system from the abstracted to the detailed phase. Furthermore, the system makes it possible to modify detailed sub-systems to sub-systems in which the extent of abstraction by granularity of description is coarser without having to change the detailed architecture of the sub-system.

Information analysis in a distributed dynamic group technology method

Article Abstract:

The impact of information arriving or missing at a different order on the grouping of machine parts is analyzed using the Group Technology method. Variations in information availability are considered in a case in which parts are grouped as they arrive in a piecewise manner. The methodology shows that it is possible for machine parts to change their priorities due to design changes or arrive dynamically without causing interruptions in the algorithm. The algorithm can be implemented as a distributed system featuring several computers.

Structural reliability estimation based on simulation within limited sampling region

Article Abstract:

Structural failure probabilities are estimated using an algorithm based on a simulation within a limited sampling region. The proposed algorithm restricts samples outside the beta-sphere and within an effective distance range while assuming that the basic random variables are independent normal variables and the reliability index are known. Numerical results confirm the validity of the estimation method in the form of good estimates of the failure probabilities.
