The genius is in the detail

Article Abstract:

Two new graphics techniques are enabling the standardization of impressive realism in third-dimensional (3-D) computer graphics: the routine covering of surfaces with textures, and the smoothing of lines and the edges of figures on the screen. Such advancements, however, are adding confusion to the industry, since it is often unclear how they will be used in such an immature field. The real excitement in computer graphics is found in the field of rasterization, where texture mapping and anti-aliasing are performed. The anti-aliasing is done through fractional illumination of pixels and is used by Silicon Graphics in its new RealityEngine graphics system. High speed and quality is also achieved at the University of North Carolina's computer science department by mixing different forms of parallelism. In the department's Pixel-Planes system, object parallelism prevails from geometry processing all the way through rasterization.

Multinationals on the move

Article Abstract:

Almost every medium- to large-size company that does business in a European country will become a multinational after the unification of Europe in 1992. In preparation for 1992, there have been a number of mergers, joint ventures, and sales of business units over the past few years. Many European companies see acquisitions as the quickest way to have stronger operations in Europe. Japanese companies are also expanding rapidly in Europe. Analysts say European countries are strong in existing business and brand-name recognition in their home countries and in other European countries. Their weaknesses are heavy concentration of business in a single country and little experience in merging worldwide operations and supply bases.
