Transformer machines could soon be a reality

Article Abstract:

An idea for a new generation of robots that can change their shape has been conceived by computer programmer Joseph Michael. A scheme has been devised to build an assembly of same-sized cubes that could independently either slide over the other bricks in the construction or lock onto them. The shape-changing robots could rearrange themselves to fit a variety of structures, such as inaccessible tubes and ducts, and would be controlled by a computer. Applications could include repairs to nuclear and chemical reactors.
