Urban activists on the Ho Chi Minh trail

Article Abstract:

Vietnam has attracted foreign investment since this was permitted in 1986. Ho Chi Minh City is the country's commercial center and population densities have increased as have fire hazards. Pollution, traffic and squatting create problems. The government can clear areas to be developed, and this may attract squatters who seek compensation for being evicted. Planners are kept busy with many applications to build high-rise properties. A height limit has been set for new buildings.

Natural steps along the tourist trail: problems inevitably abound in tourist areas like Purbeck and Devon, but with care the effects can be diffused

Article Abstract:

Just over half of the Purbeck area of Dorset is within the Dorset AONB, however its popularity leads to countryside management problems such as traffic congestion, erosion, pollution and litter. Purbeck District Councils, county planners and the Countryside Commission set up a Purbeck Heritage Committee and Forum, and has launched the Keeping PUrbeck Special: A Strategy for the Purbeck Heirtage Area document, covering tourism, transport and conservation.

A milestone on the nature trail

Article Abstract:

PPG9 (nature conservation) stems from various international obligations and agreements including the EC Habitats and Species Directive and the Biodiversity Convention and Agenda 21, arising from the Rio Summit. It reasserts government policy on nature conservation issues and calls for nature conservation objectives to be considered in all planning activities.
