Television stations in the 10 largest markets were to begin digital television (DTV) broadcasts by 11/1/98, but were ahead, by three days, of the deadline they themselves set when they carried the John Glenn space shuttle trip live in high-definition television (HDTV) transmission. They are doing little to follow it up, however. For some prime-time evening viewing presentations, the major networks use DTV, and they put on an occasional special event. CBS has put on some National Football League games live in HDTV. NBC plans to produce The Tonight Show in HDTV in autumn 1999. PBS plans to have monthly evening specials in HDTV and begin an around-the-clock kids' channel as a standard-definition multicast. Cable plans and the resolution to be used there are still being settled. There is a problem with how quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) used by some system will go through the DTV 8-VSB signal for cable. Companies discussed include Snell & Willcox (equipment), Intel, Time Warner Communications, Cablevision Systems, DirecTV, Home Box Office, EchoStar, Fox TV, ABC and Unity Motion.

Squeeze plays - DTV compression and scaling

Article Abstract:

Data compression and scaling are technical issues for digital television (DTV). Before transmission data must be compressed in a powerful and fast way and then at the DTV set it must be decompressed quickly. Power consumption becomes an issue. Thomson Consumer Electronics specifies that its 3-in. widescreen direct-view television set will be at 1 megapixel. Encoding is easier with pre-recorded programming, movies and the like, than with live events. That is a compromise that will balance environmental and mechanical factors with resolution and produce a picture that is quite clear at the normal viewing distance for the set size.
