When Lab and Field Scientists Don't Communicate

Article Abstract:

Almost every company with an in-house technical service lab finds that neither the scientists nor those in the field feel the other side can communicate in the same language. Communications problems are bound to occur when professionals of different disciplines must cooperate. A liason, or interface communicator, who can understand both groups has been used effectively to improve relationships between the groups.

Mervin J. Kelly: Manager and Motivator

Article Abstract:

Mervin J. Kelly, as research director of Bell Laboratories for twenty-three years, helped make Bell Labs the research laboratory it is today. He was appointed director in 1936 and is remembered as an intelligent, hard-driving man. Kelly was a key factor in development of the transistor and in solid state research. Photographs of Kelly are included.

William D. Coolidge: Shirt-Sleeves Manager

Article Abstract:

William D. Coolidge, inventor of ductile tungsten and the Coolidge X-ray tube, guided the General Electric Research Laboratory through its most turbulent years. Coolidge is remembered as a man of rectitude and conscience. Photographs illustrate him at several historical moments.
