Wix goes for the gold with automated SPC

Article Abstract:

Wix Filtration Products replaced its manual statistical process control (SPC) system with an automated system as part of its quality improvement efforts. By using an automated SPC system, the company was able to reduce its material wastes by 6% in 1994. Wix Filtration Products also reports more efficient data collection, analysis and retrieval since its shift to an automated SPC system. Communication among engineering, manufacturing and quality assurance employees also improved.

Ultrasonics detects leaks at Ford

Article Abstract:

Customers are usually intolerant of air and water leaks in their cars because they are bothersome and usually hard to repair. Ford Motor Co, however, subjects its Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis models to ultrasonic scanning tests to ensure quality. The Ultraprobe 2000 is an ultrasonic leak detector which was developed by UE Systems Inc. This detector is capable of transforming ultrasound frequencies into frequencies that are perceptible to the humans.

Hayes Industrial Brake of Mequon, WI, successfully uses several quality control concepts such as failure mode and effects analysis, design for assembly, quality function deployment, and returned goods analysis and workstation documentation. Hayes' use of its warranty program to generate information on how to improve quality of its brake systems is described.
