Wobbling gears achieve high ratios

Article Abstract:

A gearbox developed for space probes uses the principle of a rotating coin to achieve very high reduction ratios in a small space. The gearbox is based on four compact bevel gears where at least four teeth are in contact with one another at any point of time which makes it possible to use gears made from inexpensive materials while at the same time transmit more torque with less vibration.

Tethered cycloid varies its ratios

Article Abstract:

John Hammerbeck, who invented the SCRAM complaint variable ratio coiled spring drive, has come up with hypocycloidal reducer that walks around an inner output gear to produce contra rotation at a high reduction ratio. The fixed ratio mechanism model and the variable ratio mechanism model are discussed.
