Appropriate technology for human waste management in developing countries

Article Abstract:

Municipal sewerage technology in developing countries must be modified from Western standards to avoid gross waste. Cost-effective urban excreta management applicable to developing countries entails the making of feasibility studies emphasizing operation and maintenance costs. Waste disposal should also be evaluated so as not to favor affluent areas only. The designs for sewerage systems should be standardized by the government so that skills training and the procurement of parts can be facilitated.

Feds adopt industry standards

Article Abstract:

The passage of the 1995 National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act will force federal agencies to adopt technical standards developed by voluntary consensus standards organizations such as the American National Standards Institute. The law, which amends the 1980 Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act, will likewise affect federal procurement specifications and cooperative research and development agreements.
