Biodiversity effects on ecosystem functioning: emerging issues and their experimental test in aquatic environments

Article Abstract:

Different important features of aquatic experimental systems that affect the experimental approaches during the process of understanding the effects of biodiversity on the functioning of the ecosystem are presented. The multifarious aspects of biodiversity are discussed, which facilitate in understanding effects of biodiversity changes on the overall functioning of the ecosystem and assist in identifying the mechanisms involved.

Effects of species diversity on the primary productivity of ecosystems: extending our spatial and temporal scales of inference

Article Abstract:

A simple patch-dynamics model is developed to examine some of the scale-dependent and independent qualities of the diversity-productivity relationship. It is found that the primary determinant of the diversity-productivity relationship in natural ecosystems could consist of the relative control of community structure by local regional processes.

Biodiversity effects on ecosystem functioning: insights from aquatic systems

Article Abstract:

The outcomes of an international conference held at Ascona, Switzerland, which aimed to explore the potential of aquatic systems for assessing the role played by biodiversity in the ecosystem, are presented. The role played by marine water systems and freshwater systems in resolving the ecosystem problems is demonstrated.
