'Biohyets': A method for displaying the extent and severity of environmental impacts

Article Abstract:

Bioindicators are often more sensitive indicators of both biodiversity and environmental change than abiotic pollution parameters. Biohyets, which are the contours of bioindicator index values derived from multiple biotic measurements, is used to map variability in ecosystem health and to identify regions, response variables and disturbance parameters for more rigorous analysis.

Modelling ecological expertise for forest planning calculations-rationale, examples, and pitfalls

Article Abstract:

Different possibilities are considered for utilizing ecological expertise in multi-objective forest planning through some practical examples. Conclusions reveal that the modelling of ecological expertise is a useful tool in forest planning, but the inevitable uncertainties of expert judgments and the special pitfalls in modelling of expertise, should be taken into account.

Assessing soil biodiversity across Great Britain: national trends in the occurrence of heterotrophic bacteria and invertebrates in soil

Article Abstract:

The first integrated survey of soil biota and chemical properties to assess the biodiversity of soils are discussed. A series of robust datasets are produced from a total of 1052 soil samples that were collected across Great Britain in order to investigate relationships between soil biota and environmental factors.
