Please hold for the....: why are the telephone companies the last to use their own new technologies?

Article Abstract:

Telephone companies like to market the latest telecommunications innovations to their customers. When it comes to customer service, however, the companies are reluctant to utilize the kind of technology that would make response time and service execution fast, efficient and accurate. Bell Atlantic claims it is planning to install `screen pop' software that stores a customer's profile and provides immediate information to a customer representative as soon as a client succeeds in reaching one. The companies still fail in creating systems that address disconnect problems and computer problems when reps deal with customers.

Domestic demand is thus likely to be strong, and this should help corporate earnings, offsetting concern about the strong guilder.
