Carl Anthony: the Urban Habitat

Article Abstract:

Anthony advocates applying the concept of environmental protection to inner cities by incorporating programs that include the total human environment. Because inner city residents work in jobs in the suburbs, their transportation system should be built according to environmental guidelines.

From the Ground Up is a project in the Washington, DC, area designed to grow low-cost produce for the inhabitants of inner cities. The organic farm is one of an increasing number of such projects that link the environment with the nutritional needs of the urban poor.

Students on campuses across the US are rejecting the apathy of the 1980s and demonstrating for political and social causes, most notably environmental awareness. Surveys of student involvement are cited and various protests are described.
