Local factors and colonist dispersal influence crustacean zooplankton recovery from cultural acidification

Article Abstract:

The roles of local environmental conditions and dispersal limitation in zooplankton recovery from acidification in Swan Lake, Ontario a historically acidified, metal-contaminated lake is described. Most zooplankton emerged from dispause in both lakes indicating that a mechanism contributes to the recolonization of acidified lakes once pH returns to normal.

Straw and winter flooding benefit mosquitoes and other insects in a rice agroecosystem

Article Abstract:

Experimental rice fields to quantify how detritus and winter flooding would affect aquatic insects, including mosquitoes are studied. It is shown that conserving rice straw may lead to greater populations of mosquitoes that are capable of transmitting dangerous viruses to humans and livestock in adjacent communities.
